Fishing in Spain

When we talk about the Pyrenees, the only thing that comes to mind is its incredible landscapes and wildlife.

Fishing in Spain is certainly among the top river fishing destinations in the world.

The great variety of rivers let us the opportunity to choose the type of fishing desired, from small mountain rivers where we will look for large amounts of brown trout, usually with dry flies.

The other option is to go directly to the largest rivers where we will have the opportunity to land specimens reaching 80cm long.

These two options can be combined if the fisherman wishes to vary his adventure a little.

Accommodation:

The culture, gastronomy and Spanish climate are undoubtedly one of the reasons why so many people return year after year to our rivers. We have a wide variety of accommodations near fishing areas, from small and cozy village lodges to hotels with all their luxuries. If you wish, Rupisalmo can manage the hotel reservation and offer what we consider most suitable depending on the area we are going to fish.

Suggested Equipment:

The equipment used in these rivers are usually single hand rods about 10 feet long for lines # 3 to # 5 in quite fast sinking rates.

For streamer fishing lovers we suggest some of this patterns: Woolly Bugger, Sculpin, Lynch’s Double D, Hawkins’ Hat Trick, Mallard’s Sculpinator, Mallard’s Zebra Sculpin, Mallard’s Better Baitfish Golden Shiner, Crystal Bugger… All with natural colors like brown, black, olive, dark purple.

For nymph fishing, the tippet will depend on the water conditions and the level of the fisherman, but in general lines from 0.011mm to 0.013mm will be used.

In general, tungsten heads from 2.5mm to 4.5mm are the most used depending always on the water conditions and the depth of the pool. During the summer months, dry fly fishing CDC type with natural colors (green, brown, black, garnet) is a spectacle in the small mountain rivers. We will also use large tricopters or similar to fish with a small nymph under (tandem).

You can also use barbless mepps for all those who do not feel comfortable with fly fishing. In that case, we will use simple silver mepps or with points from nº1 to nº3.

Fishing Season:

The fishing season in our areas runs from March 15th to October 20th.

We can also fish in some rivers where fishing is open all year round, usually in areas where large rainbow and brown trout live together.

Depending on the time of the season, the fishing will be drastically different, cold days and slower fishing at the beginning of the season or very warm days in summer with a lot of surface activity.

Although we achieve consistent fishing throughout the season, catches increase from the end of June until the end of the season.

Fishing in Spain is an experience you do not want to miss!
